COOPERS CORNERS SUBSTATION RECEIVES NEW EQUIPMENT TO STRENGTHEN TRANSMISSION INFRASTRUCTURE

Highlighting New York State’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its transmission system, New York Power Authority (NYPA) Saturday (March 28) welcomed the arrival at the Coopers Corners Substation of a shunt reactor.  The equipment is part of a nearly $9.8 million investment to help protect power lines running alongside Coopers Corners from high voltage spikes that can occur during periods of low demand.  Owned by NYPA, the equipment will be operated and maintained by New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG).

The 378,000-pound shunt reactor began its journey by boat from China last July.  In December, the equipment was carried 365 miles by train from Newark, N.J. to Port Jervis, N.Y. The last 26.5 mile leg of the journey, traveling along local roadways in Orange and Sullivan counties, involved extensive planning with local transportation and safety agencies and the installation of temporary portable bridges over numerous existing ones to support the heavy load during the day-long trip. The shunt reactor is expected to be fully installed and operational by May 2015.
