EPRI Announces New Members of the Board of Directors

PALO ALTO, CA—The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) announced effective today that Denis P. O’Brien, senior executive vice president, Exelon Corporation and chief executive officer of Exelon Utilities, has been appointed chairman of the Board of Directors and Gil C. Quiniones, president and chief executive officer of the New York Power Authority (NYPA), as vice chairman.

O’Brien oversees the utility businesses of Exelon which include: Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE), Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) and PECO. Together, they make Exelon one of the largest electric and natural gas distribution companies in the nation, serving more than 6.6 million electric, and 1.2 million gas customers.

Quiniones is responsible for developing and implementing NYPA’s strategic vision and mission. The Power Authority is the nation’s largest state-owned electric utility, owning and operating one-third of New York State’s high voltage transmission system and providing a substantial portion of the state’s electricity from its clean power plants.

Mark B. Bonsall, general manager and chief executive officer of Salt River Project; Joseph P. Brannan, executive vice president and chief executive officer of the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation; and, Patricia L. Kampling, chair, president and chief executive officer of Alliant Energy will join the board and serve 4-year terms.

Interim directors elected to 4-year terms are Jim Burke, chairman and chief executive officer of TXU Energy; Pat K. Collawn, chairman, president and chief executive officer of PNM Resources; Kimberly S. Greene, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Southern Company; and, B. Keith Trent, executive vice president and chief operating officer – Regulated Utilities of Duke Energy Corporation.

One-year term extensions (until April 2015) were approved for Nicholas K. Akins, chairman, president and chief executive officer of AEP and Gale E. Klappa, chairman and chief executive officer of We Energy.

Also Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) selected Terry Oliver, chief technology innovation officer, to serve on the board. BPA and TVA, both federal power marketing agencies, each have a permanent board seat.

“Denis and Gil are well suited to lead our board because they bring keen insight on the challenges faced by the industry and a clear vision that technology provides the best solution to meet those challenges,” said Michael W. Howard, EPRI president and chief executive officer. “We are also privileged to have new members, all of whom have broad and deep industry experience join us as well.”
