FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WHITE PLAINS—The New
York Power Authority (NYPA) has launched a new recruitment website
in response to a major challenge facing the nation’s electric
utility industry—the growing shortage of entry-level and experienced
personnel in engineering and other disciplines.
The
Careers@NYPA
website was designed to provide potential applicants with a one-stop
resource containing detailed information about the Power Authority,
the nation’s largest state-owned electric utility and one of New
York’s leading electricity suppliers. With the state’s current and
future energy needs a critical concern, NYPA must compete with other
utilities for qualified employees in a variety of technical,
professional and administrative fields.
“The Power Authority’s
strategic plan includes a goal for employee development and
readiness, reflecting the importance of a well-trained workforce,”
said Roger B. Kelley, NYPA president and chief executive officer.
“This website will be an important tool in our efforts to recruit
talented and motivated individuals who will help the Power Authority
fulfill its mission of providing clean, economical and reliable
energy while promoting energy efficiency and innovation for the
benefit of our customers and all New Yorkers.”
The staffing shortages
being experienced throughout the energy sector are partly the result
of demographics, since much of America’s workforce is rapidly
approaching retirement age. This was noted at a November 2007
hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural
Resources. Recruiters also point to recent trends such as downsizing
that have discouraged young people from pursuing careers in the
utility industry.
To help job-seekers
better understand the diverse opportunities available, the Careers@NYPA
website includes more than a dozen employee testimonials showing
Power Authority staff members at various jobs throughout the state.
It also contains information about NYPA facilities and the
communities where they are located, internship and employee training
programs, as well as work/life-balance policies and benefits.
The Internet site was
developed in-house as just one element of a multifaceted recruitment
campaign being coordinated by Human Resources staff with assistance
from the Corporate Communications unit within NYPA’s Energy
Marketing and Corporate Affairs business group. Other materials
include handouts and portable displays to be used at job fairs and
college campuses.
To view the Careers@NYPA
website, which includes an updated list of positions now available,

www.nypa.gov/careers; it can also be accessed directly from NYPA’s general website,
www.nypa.gov, by clicking on the link for Career Opportunities.
