LEWISTON—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will be a sponsor of the Great Lakes Student Summit on May 18 and 19.  The environmental education program will be held in Western New York with over 200 student participants, from grades 5 through 9, representing the Great Lakes states.   The event will be based at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and students will travel to the Aquarium of Niagara and the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center for field activities.

“The Power Authority has supported the Great Lakes Student Summit since the event’s inception in 1995 and is proud to continue that tradition this year,” said Joanne Willmott, NYPA’s regional manager-community relations for Western New York.
Students will participate in educational workshops and hands-on field trips, including a voyage on the Buffalo River and Lake Erie.  They will work toward the development of a Statement of Stewardship, reflecting what they have learned during the summit and setting forth a plan as to how they can protect the Great Lakes.
Helen Domske of New York Sea Grant, an organizer of the event, said, "We are pleased to have the New York Power Authority partner with us once again to provide this opportunity for students to learn about the Great Lakes and the environment and incorporate what they have learned into their Statement of Stewardship, which they can follow well after the summit has concluded.”

The New York Power Authority also operates the Power Vista, the admission-free visitors center at its Niagara Power Project.  Educational programs and special events are offered there year-round and visitors are always welcome.  For additional information or to schedule a program, call 716-286-6661 or toll free 1-866-NYPA-FUN.  Information is also available on the web site at www.nypa.gov
