The New York Power Authority has helped make New York State a pacesetter in electric-drive and clean transportation technologies. Working with our customers, we have helped place more than 1,250 electric and hybrid-electric vehicles into service. Together these vehicles have traveled more than 11 million miles. The clean transportation programs and partnerships we're helping to establish, help improve air quality and reduce dependence on foreign oil.
NYPA, along with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), is spearheading Governor Andrew Cuomo's Charge New York Initiative, announced during his 2013 State of the State address. The goal is to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years and to put up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road during that period.
NYPA and NYSERDA are planning to install 360 charging stations by 2014. NYPA has issued an RFP for 100 of the stations. We have also installed charging stations for use by our employees at our White Plains administrative offices.
We are the nations largest supplier of electricity for mass transit, powering the subway and commuter trains of metropolitan New York. Today, NYPA is playing a significant role in these efforts to help New York State achieve a cleaner, greener future.
Our vision stretches beyond New York’s borders, as well. We are an active member of the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA), an international consortium of more than 100 energy producers, automotive manufacturers and their suppliers, state and local governments and others working to promote electric transportation.
